Understanding the symptoms of cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is basically a neurological condition in which the muscle coordination as well as the body movement is affected. This condition is caused as a result of brain damage at the time of pregnancy, during delivery or shortly after delivery. There are several different types of cerebral palsy. One of them is Mild cerebral palsy.

Mild cerebral palsy is a condition in which the brain damage suffered is not too much and there is only a slight impairment. The symptoms cannot be easily recognized or detected in such a condition. Such symptoms usually can’t be seen by naked eyes. In fact in most of the cases even the doctors and parents fail to detect this problem. This problem might be discovered by the parents in the later stages when the child has problems due to physical complications.

Since this is not easily detectable, thus nobody thinks of intervention. But if it is detected in the early stages, a proper treatment can serve beneficial for the child. For an instance, at the time of toe walking, the child’s motor skills can be enhanced with the help of plastic boot.

Mild cerebral palsy can also bring about damage to the arms of the child. It has been observed that a child suffering from mild cerebral palsy usually has a problem in lifting heavier and bulky objects from a particular hand. But on the contrary, he will have no problem in writing with a pencil. You might wonder that the same muscles are used for both the tasks but the difference lies in the fact that the brain has trouble sending messages for one of these tasks.

In case of mild cerebral palsy the child will suffer from physical limitations. The child might appear completely normal and might not even face any difficulty in the educational sphere. He may actually excel in the studies but might face difficulty in other coordination tasks.

The symptoms of mild cerebral palsy might be misinterpreted by the parents. Some of the common symptoms of cerebral palsy are toe walking on the tips of the toes. The child might keep the arms suspended in air, resembling a teddy bear. The child might have a tendency to bend arms or clench fists unknowingly. The child might appear clumsy due to the lack of coordination. He might complain of leg pain after doing normal amount of certain task.

The legs of the child might also appear very tight. It may take him a lot of effort to walk or stand on the foot. Thus these are some of the symptoms that point to the fact that the child is suffering from mild cerebral palsy. Sometimes these symptoms might go unnoticed. The child may begin to lose his self-esteem due to what he is facing. But the best part is that those suffering from mild cerebral palsy attain success in certain activities and excel than others. So the child should be constantly encouraged and looked after.
