Cerebral palsy in infants

Most of the children with cerebral palsy will have a congenital deformity of the developing brain, which means that the abnormality of the brain existed at the time of birth and it is not caused by the factors occurring after the birth.

All of the malformations can not be seen by the medical experts, even with new technologies used in most sophisticated scans. But when the cerebral palsy is recognized in an infant, a congenital defect of the brain is suspected. It is definitely true that proper prenatal care is a crucial part for avoiding the congenital problems.

Cerebral palsy in infants, due to the congenital problems or the birth defects, may occur even after the mother of the child strictly follows the instructions of physician for caring herself and the developing infant, during the pregnancy. Hence the actual reason of birth defect cannot be defined but we do know one thing that the injuries or damages to the developing brain will cause for the cerebral palsy in infants.

Premature birth and a low birth weight of infants are shown to be closely related to the incidence of damage to the developing brain and results in cerebral palsy in infants. There are some known chemicals, which will unfavorably affect the developing brain of fetus.

The alcohol is one among them which is being the most commonly used. The consumption of alcohol by the mother during the pregnancy will cause for the defects of several body systems, including the neurological system.

The smoking habit of pregnant mother is shown the reason to decrease the birth weight of the infant, which is also connected with several disorders including cerebral palsy in infants.

Studies have proved that the birth trauma is one of the reasons for cerebral palsy in infants. The other probabilities for the cerebral palsy in infants include the abnormal growth of brain, prenatal injuries to brain, which affects directly or indirectly the neurons in developing brain, premature birth, and brain damages occurring in the first three years of life.

The advanced medical technologies for the last 20 years, to take care of premature infants have shown a dramatical change in the rate of survival of fragile newborns without any disorders. However, the low birth weight of a baby will increase the risk for cerebral palsy in infants, dramatically.

Some conditions of pregnant mother may create risk to the developing brain of fetus and will lead to cerebral palsy in infants. A pregnant mother with auto-immune, anti-thyroid or anti-phospholipid antibodies is at increased risk of cerebral palsy for their infants.

The cytokines are proteins related with inflammation caused by the infections or autoimmune disorders, which may be toxic to the neurons in the fetal brain and cause cerebral palsy in infants.
