Athetoid Cerebral Palsy- A Type of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy is a condition when the person with the handicap has awkward movements, well known these days. There are many types of cerebral palsy and one such type is the athetoid cerebral palsy. Some signs and symptoms of this type of cerebral palsy is mentioned below.

A ususal person with cerebral palsy has awkward and shaky movements whereas a person with athetoid cerebral palsy will have sluggish and reduced movements. Some even show distortion and deformation in some parts of the body. The movements are spontaneous without any impulse.

Such movements occur in both the extremes. Sometimes the face muscles also the muscles in the body as that of the tongue are affected which results in drooling and frowned face.
The person with athetoid cerebral palsy remains calm during sleep but at times of stress and emotional disturbances, the body shows some jerky symptoms due to the muscle movements that can be general or with a single muscle.

Children with this type of cerebral palsy will be restless and will not be stay in one place. This type of behavior will be termed as disobedient and naughty as the parents cannot recognize the signs of cerebral palsy in the beginning.

For children affected with tongue they face problem in both eating and speaking. This happens as they have no control over their tongue muscle when they try to talk.

For some children it is very difficult to begin and control the posture and positions. They find it very difficult to hold a spoon or pen. They need a great deal of energy and concentration to attempt to control the movement of their body parts.

Therefore, with these major difficulties and disabilities the life of people with cerebral palsy becomes a big problem. This hampers their normal life and they will never become independent and lead a normal life like others.

Only after proper diagnosis can a physician decide on the physical treatment. The physician can assess the exact areas to be treated and the therapy will depend on the type of signs and symptoms. Physiotherapy is the only solution and for the problem and speech therapy is the answer for children with speech problems in athetoid cerebral palsy.
